SILVER RETAIN TNM SUPER LEAGUE
STAND UP FOR CHAMPIONS: Sports Minister Lucius Kanyumba crowns Silver Strikers 2009 champions
The TNM Super League closed in style on Saturday with defending champions Silver Strikers retaining the title after drawing 2-all with MTL Wanderers at Silver Stadium.
The draw against Wanderers meant the bankers have finished the season at 59 points while Escom United have finished at 58 points following their win over Moyale Barracks in their last game.
Escom United can find solace in the fact that they have broken a record after finishing the season unbeaten.
However, the clean sheet is meaningless as coach Young Chimodzi ended up failing to wrestle the title which he last won in 2007 season from Silver.
Escom have wrapped the season up with unimaginable 13 draws and 15 wins. Silver on the other hand can take pride in the fact that they have defended the title after winning 18 games, five draw and five losses.
Coach Lovemore Fazili thanked his back room staff and the players for making sure that the title remains in Lilongwe.
MTL Wanderers are third with 53 points while the fourth position has gone to Civo United following their two-all draw against Bullets FC at Kamuzu Stadium.
Champions Silver will pocket K8 million while runners up Escom will get K4 million. Third placed Wanderers will get K2 million while fourth positioned Civo will cart home K1.5 million.
To crown in all Silver’s teenage striker Tony Chitsulo has finished as the top goal scorer with 18 goals.
Sulom and sponsors TNM are expected to announce the date for the presentation ceremony soon.
